Guest artists on the record must be acknowledged and thanked profusely. A major contribution came from Tony Manna – not just for vocals and keyboard, but also for his massive production / engineering contribution to the entire album. Apart from music icon Manfred Mann playing a synthesizer solo on the title track, other skilled musicians on the album include John Lingwood on drums, Eric van Lugo on additional vocals, Louie Vigilante on bass guitar and Charlie de Chant on sax.
Dave, from Aberdeen in Scotland, moved to London in the mid ‘70s to develop his musical career. Fans will know that he was soon invited to join Manfred Mann’s Earth Band and played with them around the World, for years. (Dave’s guitar solo on the MMEB’s ‘Blinded By The Light’ track has been listed by ‘Guitar Magazine’ as number 12 in their list of the “25 Greatest Wah Solos Of All Time”.) Although Dave eventually left the Earth Band, he remains on good terms with Manfred Mann, who plays keyboard as a guest artist on the new record’s eponymous ‘Flying Blind’ track. After the Earth Band years, Dave played with Thin Lizzy, including a highly-applauded tour of Japan, before moving on to pursue his own musical projects.
Then, one day in 1988, Dave took a total and radical change of direction. Setting music aside, professionally (though still playing his guitars for recreation) he moved to the USA and qualified as an addictions counselor to work in that field. Although fulfilled in his counseling work for many years, the recent theft of his identity made Dave think about his musical past. He didn’t want his reputation to be tarnished by an imposter. The ‘Flying Blind’ album is the fortuitous result.
The recording aside, a record must also be brought to the music-listening public. So Dave contacted an old friend, David Main, a media lawyer with many years of international music business experience. David now manages the commercial side of the production for Dave - including all contracts, sales, marketing and music publishing for‘Flying Blind’. To serve as the album’s ‘business vehicle’, a small-but-sufficient record company has been set up for Dave: Breaking Records LLC. David’s contact details for all business matters are given below.
Dave doesn’t wish to get heavily into business side – because, as a music man, he wants to focus his efforts on playing his guitar. Naturally, though, he is keen that his fans (old and new) should hear his music. So, to avoid the traditional record company set-up with its massively ponderous infra-structure, Breaking Records LLC is releasing the tracks on ‘Flying Blind’ as internet downloads. We have now negotiated all the necessary third-party deals for this, including a worldwide publishing deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing.
In his ‘Flying Blind’ album, Dave has striven to combine the proven with the new. As Dave says to his fans: “Because I was producing my first new record in years, I committed myself to creating an album of songs which are each different in tone and pace - and which are all ‘familiar, but fresh’. I hope you feel I’ve achieved that for you.”
The intriguing cover for the album was designed by Sally Novak, a highly-talented, Brooklyn-based artist, whose other works can be viewed at: www.sallynovak.org
[ Please note: for the avoidance of doubt, Breaking Records LLC is not in any way related to or otherwise associated with ‘Breaking Records’, or ‘Breaking Records Music’, or ‘Breaking Records Licensing’, or any similar-sounding entity (incorporated, or otherwise) label, or trademark. ]
